Biographical Sketch - Jhoonar Barrera

Jhoonar BarreraIn his own words....
I was born and raised in San Diego, California on June 30, 1976. I am a father, a son, and brother. I lived in San Diego until I was 21yrs old. In January of 1999, I joined the United States Army, was placed with the 82nd Airborne Division and stationed in North Carolina for 4 yrs. After 9 years of service with the 82nd and two tours of duty overseas, I joined the National Guard in Dublin, California.

Then on September 27, 2007 my life was forever changed, drastically. While moving heavy equipment, a 500 lb. conventional oven stacked high on a forklift came crashing down, landing on my back.

I fractured ribs, ruptured my diaphragm, and suffered a spinal cord injury at levels T11- L1, which left me a paraplegic.

Even now, 3 years later, I know I’m getting better. In addition to my intense workouts, I play basketball and lacrosse to stay in shape, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I believe if a person has a strong will, an open heart, and believes in the higher, that things will work out for the best, as they should.

But it all starts with wanting to make a difference, not be the difference
